s04e03 “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Andy Balaam thinks it sounds worthy and tiresome, but Andy Cockerill describes an unsettling, grown-up horror film, whose story line is slightly weird, probably because it’s based on an Ancient Greek play.

s04e02 “Annihiliation” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film Annihilation. For some unknown reason, Andy Balaam starts talking about A Perfect Circle’s Annihilation, which is not very good, but is on the same album as A Perfect Circle’s Imagine, which sounds like an army of zombie hippies is coming to eat your brains, but in a good way. Andy Cockerill tries to ignore all this and gets on with talking about the film, which he says is a visually interesting hard sci-fi story that is original, tense and nicely fooled him. On they way they mention All the Money in the World, Missions and Little Nightmares.

s04e01 “Split” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film Split. Andy Balaam states that it is a light but entertaining sequel to Source Code but Andy Cockerill explain it’s a chilling psycho movie that, although it does feature “women in peril”, is not leering, and is very nicely made.

s03e21 “The Open Source Community” – The Good Robot Andys

What is Open Source? Why is it important? Andy Cockerill tries to to restrain Andy Balaam from rambling forever about Linux, Apache and all the cool things that power the Googles, Facebooks, and Amazons of the new world we are all living in. It’s all about Free Software.

s03e20 “Mute” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film Mute. Andy Balaam thinks it’s a rollicking Disney adventure about a tiny mouse who can’t speak, but Andy Cockerill tells him it’s a very dark, edgy sci-fi with disturbing scenes, featuring a man who can’t speak trying to remain a decent human being under extreme pressure.

s03e19 “Your Name” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film Your Name. Andy Balaam speculates that it’s a rom-com starring a waif that thinks it’s more than it is, but Andy Cockerill explains it’s a Manga film that starts off like a teen romance, but quickly becomes true sci-fi with real poignancy.

s03e18 “Silence” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, with lots of spoilers of the film Silence. Andy Balaam thinks it’s a night sky-inspired contemplative film with a strong lead from Kate Winslet, but Andy Cockerill explains as slowly as he can that it’s a study of faith and opposing viewpoints, where the ancient Japanese authorities try to torture a Jesuit priest into renouncing his faith.

s03e17 “Meltdown & Spectre” – The Good Robot Andys

The Andys take a break from movie discussion to talk tech, about the Meltdown and Spectre exploits that allow malicious people to grab secret information from loads of different types of computer. Andy Balaam insists that the way it works is fascinatingly clever, and there is only one audible yawn from Andy Cockerill.

Also mentioned are Noah, and an insightful bit of feedback from Danni about Colossal.

There’s a lot more detail on Meltdown and Spectre on the Project Zero Blog.

s03e16 “Colossal” – The Good Robot Andys

Andy and Andy discuss (with lots of spoilers) the film Colossal. Andy Balaam, who hasn’t seen it, decides it’s a Bill Murray vehicle with realistically-rendered giant robots, but Andy Cockerill, who has seen it, explains that it’s “one of the most utterly bizarre, yet really rewarding films” he’s seen, with giant robots and a giant monster.

Along the way the Andys mention Godzilla, Godzilla and Godzilla, Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, as well as the game Shadow of the Colossus, and the RHLSTP podcast featuring Johann Hari.

As an extra bonus, Andy C says “dude” exactly on the beat of the closing music.

s03e14 “Get Out” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of Get Out. Andy Balaam thinks it’s an Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary that reveals his plans to be president, but Andy Cockerill explains it’s a cracking horror film with a brutal social message. The discussion quickly dissolves into two middle-aged white men moaning about the state of the world.

s03e13 “The Red Turtle” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of The Red Turtle. Andy Balaam thinks it might be a rollicking Disney adventure, but Andy Cockerill sets him straight that it’s a beautiful story of love and family with not a single word spoken. They speculate about what it all means, and Andy B somewhat inexplicably goes on about the video game Brothers.

s03e12 “Prevenge” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of Prevenge. Andy Balaam suggests it’s a computer game spin-off based on Worms, but after a brief discussion concluding that would probably not make for a brilliant game, Andy Cockerill explains it’s a comedy slasher about a pregnant woman taking revenge on behalf of her unborn child by a series of grisly killings. The discussion of what the film means is discussion in an unsatisfactory manner.

The conversation also wanders hinter and yon.

s03e11 “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” – The Good Robot Andys

Discussion, and lots of spoilers, of The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Andy Balaam thinks it’s a rough cop drama, but Andy Cockerill explains that it’s just a really well-done horror. They briefly discuss the fact that the only significant female character doesn’t move or speak, and is pure evil, but fail to address adequately the question of whether this is a metaphor for modern film-making’s overall approach.

There is brief discussion of loads of other films, including Blade Runner 2049 (which they haven’t seen) and Pitch Perfect (which they have, and surprisingly liked).
