Well, andy, since you asked, John Le Carre's "The Constant Gardener" which I'm really enjoying. I only discovered him recently and he's wicked, especially the older ones.

I have just finished American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and Hannibal by Thomas Harris. Both were really good although I was a bit dissapointed by the end of Hannibal
I have just started reading man and boy by Tony Parsons. Only about 50 pages in and it looks like it will be good.

Haven't read any John Le Carre. Have heard of him... what kind of books does he write?
I read Hannibal but haven't seen it - apparently they change the end on the film.
Currently reading a book by the trackside doctor at F1 races which I can't remember the name of. And a book by Max Lucado about the crucifixion. They're both ok but not unputdownable.

Watched American Psycho film - quite dull but ok - apparently very different from the book which is very graphic. The film is mostly suggestive of violence.
Hannibal film was frankly ordinary. The end was an example of how if you try too hard you fail dismally.
JLeC writes spy books, but unlike anyone else. Beautiful spy books.

Hate Lord of the Rings, but enjoyed the film.
I think I enjoyed it first time but it is quite boring.

American Psycho book is infinitely better than the film. Film was dull and uninspiring. Read the book it if FANTASTIC.
Hannibal, well err..., they should have kept to the plot of the book as it was a better ending and dealt with other aspects in a more intriguing way. I think the change of the end is what made Jodie Foster turn down the part in the first place.
Lord of the Rings was a great book. I am also really pleased that they kept the plot and story line in the film as close to the first two books as possible. I was all set up for a big disappointment at the cinema but left feeling pleased.
Haven't read any more of man and boy since my last post. Have been sorting out ICS over the network. Problems with firewalls but sorted now I think.

>>American Psycho
Spoke to someone who said it was just deliberately sick and revelling in brutal violence for no real purpose. Mind you, she gave up reading before the end which changes it a bit...
>>Hannibal
just dodgy
>>Lord of the Rings was a great book.
*sigh* boring

Did you not like LotR Andy?
I started to read it once, didn't get very far and am contemplating trying again...

LotR was a lil slow in the middle but I thgought it was really good. American Psycho: Well I didn't thisnk it was gratuitous. I thought it tackled parts of humanity and emotion which are often left alone by journalists and writers. Same for Hannibal.

The person I spoke to found it unhelpful, but it's good that you found it helpful.

I borrowed a J Le C book from the library. Am going to go and read it when I've waded my way through a few more emails... it's ok so far.
I can't remember the title of it though!

Is it one of the older ones? They're better - the ones with Smiley in are particularly good.

It is with Smiley in.
I think it said it was his first novel actually...
"Call for Murder" maybe? It's very good - only issue with it is slight difficulty with political terms which are thrown in which I don't really understand! But very well written and one of those books that makes you want to read it.
Very cool!
Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah I just love the way he writes and the sympathy he has with deeply flawed people.

"Call for the Dead" it was actually called.
And it wasn't until a couple of days after I'd finished the book that I suddenly realized why it was called that... I am so dense!

There's an early morning wake up phone call thing on the morning following when a guy supposedly committed suicide. So why would he order phone call?
And I hope none of you are going to read the book now and think that was too much of a spoiling the plot sentence...

Oh! I never noticed that! Duh.
By the way M there's a "basics of writing a screenplay" series I've been reading and really enjoying that is starting to help me see why you always know what's going to happen in a film!
It's at:
