Ah - it's great to be back in the real world again, able to view more than the Wiki web now my flu's passed and I can leave my room. Good to see Ship of Fools is still going strong. People must wonder why I'm cackling so much. I feel much better already. Actually, I feel a bit ill again after seeing some of those gifts...

Here's my tip for Christmas presents:

Congrats on getting better. I noticed 2 days ago that I didn't have a cold, and took a moment to appreciate it as it doesn't happen often.

I started sneezing yesterday morning and I'm now properly ill again.

Oh, I'm not the only one then. The last few days I've woke up feeling so grim and cold, I felt like I had to emigrate as soon as possible. I was worried my nose was going to start running in Lord OfThe Rings Pt 2, but it held off. This unhealthy lifestyle will finish me off some day.

Midge, what did you think of Lorf of the Rings? I haven't seen it yet, but I am really looking forward to. Did you think it was better than the first one?

Yes, I think so - though the first one I only watched on video not in the cinema. I think more happens in the second one, tho it's hard to remember back to the first. Definitely v impressive cinematically tho. I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks - I'm sure davidb must've seen it by now for example...

For me it's both... And the lifestyle. Most of the exercise I get is walking to the kettle or the pub and back.

I did enjoy The Two Towers; being a Tolkien officianado I was rather taken aback by the changes when I saw it, but afterwards I've figured out why they've done them cinematically. Certainly a mind-bogglingly good film on its own merits, if you can ignore the friction with its source material. Thinking of it as a different version of the same myth helps (all myths have different versions).

I saw 'The Two Towers' a few days ago and really enjoyed it! It's been a while since I read the book, so I can't really remember the details of it. I thought the film was amazing, though, especially the battle scene. Legolas has to be my favourite character, I think. I love the elves.

STILL haven't seen it but want to.

Saw Spiderman 2 nights ago. Utter rubbish.

Also saw Royal Tenenbaums again. Love it even more. I think you can tell a good film when 3 separate couples walk out in the cinema because they don't get it and they only went to see it because it's got Ben Stiller in it.

Unregistered User Nothing to do with the title of this thread, but I saw Spiderman last week on video cos City of God was sold out in the cinema (I wanted to watch the video of 'The man who wasn't there', but my friend said it wasn't his cup of tea). It was a good laugh, tho my friend deemed it "a crock of sh***". Tonight we wanted to see City of God, but it wasn't on any more, so we saw Gangs of New York. Quite viiolent, quite moving, in a 'mmm yes, I can see how that's a metaphor for today' kind of way. And Leonardo da Caprio is surprisingly good. Too many films to see tho... New Kaurismki film, and Spider, and The Pianist, and whatnot. Maybe I should've done a degree in Film Studies instead like my neighbour, whose thesis is on gesture in silent movies! >chin scratching)

The man who wasn't there is superb.

Spiderman is a crock of sh**

I'm boycotting Leonardo on the grounds that the teenage mutant ninja turtle of the same name was much cooler.

Hello! It's good to be back. I notice Andy that you were feeling good on 2nd Jan. Tho 2nd Jan certainly feels like a LONG time ago... and Christmas even longer. davidb, did you get any of those gadgets for Christmas? I'm disappointed I didn't get my gadget. The most exciting thing I got was - er - erm. Well, I'm not sure. White chocolate was certainly in this year. I got a white chocolate orange, which I ate in one go. And white drinking chocolate with marshmallows to put on top, which I haven't tried yet. Maybe I should go and make some now. Oh - I did get two Danish novels from my Icelandic friend. That was the most interesting present I think. I gave my mum some Little Miss Sunshine socks to cheer her up in the mornings.

Hi Midge - thanks for the picture - it really cheered me up actually.

We got a huge pile of Toblerone that we've been steadily eating our way through.

Is that the most exciting present you got? Well, you can send it to me if you like. Actually, though, I always used to think stollen was great and rich, but recently it seems to be a bit dry and boring, even the English variety with a load of marzipan in.

We bought my mum a yard-long Toblerone once for Christmas - it cost about 40 and we thought she'd love it. I wrapped newspaper round it to disguise its shape before putting the wrapping paper on. When she saw it she said "I hope it's not a big Toblerone" so we said "Oh no - of course not" and she said "Good, cos I hate Toblerone." It went very quickly though somehow.

You're lucky. I've only got the (increasingly stale) stollen still. (Unintended alliteration)
