I want to see that silly confidence trick one with Nicolas Cage coming out soon. I like him but he really is in some bad films.
Not as bad as my idol Michelle Pfeiffer. She's been in some stinkers.
Went to see a play the other day "A Woman of No Importance" by Oscar Wilde. Good and surprisingly uplifting.

I read about that in the paper - sounded a bit like an English equivalent of 'A Doll's House'. Doubt I'll get to read it for a while, unfortunately.

It's really quite good. I like Oscar Wilde. This play helped me realise that he holds himself in as much scorn as he does everyone else.

>>He made me laugh, in a very dry kind of way. (I mean the making, not the laughing.)
Actually I feel a bit like him sometimes - just sitting there not saying anything while someone else keeps talking...
>>Just saw 'Signs' on video last Friday. Did you recommend it to me once, DavidB, or am I thinking of some other film?
It was some other film. Contact?

I've been told I must watch "Tesis" (Spanish for Thesis) which is a horror film about someone trying to complete their PhD thesis.
Can't wait.
Decided for certain that Series 7 is my favourite film of all time, maybe equal with The Godfather.

Yikes, isn't that too close to the bone, like watching a film about a plane crash while you're flying?!
Haven't heard of Series 7, what's it about?

It's supposed to be a reality tv show called "The Contenders" where each contender is given a gun and has to kill the others. If you are the last person standing for 3 weeks in a row you get your freedom. It's all government sponsored, so it's perfectly legal.
The thing about it that is so fantastic is that it's so well done you forget it's not real. The strap line is "Real people in real danger!" and it is utterly engrossing. The fact that it feels so real slams the point home about what we're prepared to put people through in the name of entertainment.
The title? Well, of course, this is the box-set DVD omnibus edition of the seventh series of The Contenders...

Blimey - if I wrote a film about finishing a thesis, it'd have to be a fairly surreal one involving all the images that have come into my head, of millstones, teabags, climbing endless mountain peaks, an albatross, teeth-grinding, and that new one I've just forgotten. And at the end I'd throw myself off a bridge. And probably survive.
'You have your sheep; hell, you can follow the Ascent in your individual life, and when you grasp the two handles of empathy you approach honourably.'
Still haven't seen Fargo or the many other films mentioned. Have seen a couple of Danish films recently, both involving Danish men with Swedish wives, and family relationships which get ruined. In fact, all the Danish films I can think of are like that - apart from Nattevagten / Nightwatch.
'Sumer is icumen in; lhude sing cucu!' (Swinging fist vigorously in time to the music)
PS In case you were tempted to watch it, I've been reliably informed that 'Creep' is a "big pile o' shite".

Read about Tesis on IMDB. Seems that the horror doesn't just originate from the fact that they're trying to complete their thesis - but cos it's a thesis about the depiction of horror in films. So we could be the first to show the horror of writing itself.
Someone (who's finished ages ago) said to me on Friday that he's got a couple of pages he wrote about how he felt when he was really in the depths of despair. 'A couple of pages?!' I said. 'I've got a couple of books full in my diary!'
Also got a letter from my grandma in which she mentioned that an 80-year-old lady from Cambridge had been staying with her who'd said she knew someone who took 4 years to finish their PhD. :-? I've got no idea how to take that, as it seems such an unremarkable statement. Did she mean 'Don't worry, other people take a long time' (not remembering how many years I've been at it), or 'Hurry up', or was she just mentioning offhand that she happened to know how long one person took?

Ooh sorry. Well, I didn't exactly lose sleep over it, I just wondered for a few seconds as it seemed such a funny thing to say. Like "I heard that someone took 3 years to finish a BA". And it is useful to know what my grandma means, though it's usually not very subtle.

I've just discovered that Thesis was on at the cinema a week ago. Oh well...

A review in the local paper said it was just too weird, and gave it 6/10. So I might well watch it.
